About Jen
I first started making ads when I was eight years old. Me and my best bud Megan would produce and perform magic shows, dance routines and news broadcasts complete with weather reports and our own ads. When we weren’t creating shows we were selling lemonade on street corners, inventing video games or interviewing complete strangers at the mall.
Fast forward 15 years and I’ve got my college degree and a good job in Marketing. Drafting marketing packages, laying out ads, buying ad space and creating customer databases. But then something happened, this new digital medium came along. I read all the industry magazines, poured over sites and taught myself HTML. I started doing freelance Web development, built a server and became infatuated with all things Web. Those around me called it a fad, but I was hooked. So in 1998, I left my comfy marketing job, crossed over to the new and uncharted world of the Web never to look back.
I’ve worked at large, small and medium-sized agencies, as well as client-side, but have always served as the user advocate. I am currently the Strategy Director for Attract Interact but am often “on-loan” to other agencies needing digital strategy assistance.
Those who know me, know I love the Web. But recently I’ve been thinking about why that is. Is it because that’s where people these days spend their time – perhaps. Is it because rather than interrupting a wide spectrum of people, you get to interact only with pre-qualified and curious prospects who are coming to you to be convinced – maybe. But lately I’m thinking it’s because of the democratic nature of the Web. People aren’t being broadcast to, it’s a two-way conversation. They vote through their actions and help create what serves their needs. They can connect with like-minded others they may never find on their own in the physical world.
The Web offers insight and honesty that companies and marketers can learn from, like a perpetual focus group. And while it’s true that people’s patience goes down and expectations go up, the Web gives us the opportunity to both influence and learn.
